Abstract This study investigated the effects of Hibiscus sabdariffa on the reproductive hormone of wistar rats. Twenty eight wistar rats weighing between 160 – 200kg were used. They were divided randomly into four groups (A – D) with seven animals in each of the groups. Group A served as the control for group B and received 2ml of distilled water while group B orally received 2ml Hibiscus sabdariffa extract for 21 days, pregnancy was induced previously in these groups. In the same vein, group C served as control for group D and orally received 2ml of Hibiscus sabdariffa extract for 21 days. The results showed that there was significant increase in the level of estrogen in groups B and D compared to their control groups A and C. Progesterone level in group B decreased significantly. The mean body weight in group B animals increased significantly while animals in group C and D had no significant weight alteration. It is concluded that administration of Hibiscus sabdariffa could cause an increased estrogen level in wistar rats.
