ABSTRACT

 This study focused on assessment of quality attainment between public and private secondary schools in Uyo Local Government Area, Akwa Ibom State. The population comprised of 50 students from JSS2 and 50 from SS2 in five public and five private secondary schools in Uyo which comprised of 1000 students. A sample size of (10) percent of the population which is 100 students was selected through stratified random sampling technique and the students responded to the research questionnaire. Related literature was review on the study variables. Four (4) null hypotheses were formulated to guide the study. Data were collected using researchers designed structured questionnaire tagged (ATA) questionnaire and using the respondents SS2 and JSS2 promotion result which was a standardized state wise examination, to get their academic performance. The data were analyzed at 0.05 level of significant. After computation, the result revealed those students who belong to the private secondary schools scored better than students in public secondary schools.  Based on the findings, the researcher recommended that government should employ more professionally trained teachers, students and teachers’ characteristics and school administration should be checked and monitored. Further research should also involve why private secondary schools performed better than public secondary schools and finally, funds should be made available for the school climate to be standardized.
