Project Body:

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1     Background to the Study

The evolvement of internet has brought about the emergence of an enhanced society, through auto-aided human capacity or what described as informationalism, “a technological paradigm based on the argumentation of the human capacity of information processing   and communication made possible by the evolutions in microelectronics, software and generic engineering. Computers and digital communications, especially the internet, are the most direct expression of this revolution”.

Internet is one of the twenty-first century world’s greatest technological revolutions which provide a wide range of possibilities in the new world where information has become an essential commodity. Through it’s numerous and vast electronic resources, it create opportunities for to individuals, groups, organizations and institutions to access and retrieve information easily. The internet can therefore be described as one of the most versatile technologies in human history because information about virtually all aspects of human endeavours can be retrieved from it. Before the internet revolution in the 1990’s, libraries all over the world depend mostly on print materials as a means of storage, retrieval and dissemination. Today, digital library as against the traditional library has become more relevant to the contemporary society because of its numerous resources and flexibility through the internet technology.

According to Ani and Edem (2012), internet in the 1980s, there began a global revolution and innovation in librarianship and information profession as a result of electronic publishing, which gave rise to electronic books, journals and online databases. The emergence of electronic books and journals (e-books/e-journals) and online databases brought about a change in library collection development to electronic collection development which has led to subscription to library resources in electronic forms, commonly referred to as electronic information resources. Lawal and Ani (2008), Ani and Ahiazu (2008) posits that the phenomena of library computerization, digitalization and subscription to electronic resources has led to the evolution and development of virtual libraries in Nigerian universities in line with global librarianship.

The resources of digital library are situated in the space and are available to multiple users operating and accessing from different locations both synchronously and asynchronously. Electronic resources are information carrier tools that the libraries keep and they provide access to online information that can be accessed in electronic formats. Electronic resources involve “the use of digital library device by which every operation is done electronically with the aid of computers”. (Lancaster 2012). These information resources can be viewed electronically with the help of electricity. It comprises of the hardware and software equipments that enable Faculty of Social Science Resource Centre University of Uyo to provide adequate library services to the users.

The electronic resources which help to facilitate library services in Faculty of Social Science Resource Center University of Uyo includes the Compact- Disc Read Only Memory (CD-ROM), electronic-books, databases, Online Public Access Catalogue (OPAC). The University of Campus Library provides different library services such as the reference services through electronic   resources to its users which are made up of students, lecturers and other staff of the community.
