Project Body:

CHAPTER ONE

  1. 1.0Background to the Study
  2. 1.1Introduction

Social studies could be seen as the study of human and his interaction with his social and physical environments. The primary concern of the subject is to encourage the awareness of the world in the child, indication and development of appropriate knowledge, skill, attitude values and social activities concerning relationship in people to enable them find solution to social problem in their surroundings and to develop positive attitude towards our fellow men in society.

Globally, social studies takes the form of education for citizenship, a process of education aimed at developing social skills with which citizens could solve social problems. The relevance of social studies to the nation, the society and to the individuals is enormous as it is seen in the sense that: social studies helps in preparing the learner for living effective now ad in the foreseeable future. It does this by drawing upon the long and varied experiences of the human race for culmination into complex societal problems.

Taylor (1980) in Enem (2000) noted that social studies prepare our youths to understand the rapid changes and development that are taking place in our country.

Social studies assist in the achievement of the national education aims and objectives. It does this by dwelling on such concepts as self realization, human relationship, civic responsibility, economic competence and thinking ability.

Another role of social studies is the inculcation of patriotism and national unity. Obede (1980) in Emem (2000) contended that social studies, attempt is made to develop in students a sense of pride in the nation’s social and cultural heritage. Social studies play a positive role in the development of tolerance and understanding and thereby helping the individual to cope with diverse nature of our socio-cultural heritage

Social studies help the learner to interact effectively in a face-to-face situation. It enables man to learn to participate effectively as a member of a group, such as a civic organization that attempt to improve community living. It creates awareness and makes man sensitive to his environment.

Finally, Akintola (1980) in Emem (2000) was of the opinion that the interdisciplinary knowledge derived from social studies could help in the creation of the right environment for evolving the right laws, ethics and values for the society in a way far superior to what could be obtained via the application of any knowledge attainable from any one of it competent subject parts.

A survey at the Nigeria educational system today most especially of the secondary school level has shown that some of our social studies teachers are not really productive. This is because it is relatively new subject as it is now integrated and very few indigenous teachers studies it in the present form.

Secondly, the teaching aid necessary to facilitate its teaching are mostly not enough.

Why this under-productivity, this is seen as follows: teachers in Nigeria are publicly told that they are critically important in the modernization struggle, but annoyed out of teaching by shabby treatment and poor service condition Okeke (1986) in Enem (2002).

Some school of thoughts like Eyibe (1990) blames the reason for this low productivity of social studies teachers to lack of motivation. “That if teachers are frustrated and lack motivation in themselves, they are not likely to motivate others to learn fully occupy their time in productive education. The teachers’ problem is tied to pay fringe benefits and general physical working condition”.

The questions that are of interest to us then is, are the teachers not motivated? If yes, why? And if no why? And when and how has motivation whether in place or not has affected the teaching and learning process of social studies in our primary schools?

It is this extent that this study is designed to take a look at the impact of motivation on the teaching of social studies in our primary schools taking Avwake primary school Abraka as a case study.

  1. 1.2Statement of the Problem

Recently, the glory of social studies teachers seems to be dwindling compared to what is described in the introduction. What is responsible for such? Can this be blamed on motivation or other factors.

Most teachers are not properly trained before they asked to go and teach the pupils and so it does not give them the adequate passion about the job and seeing the teaching of these pupils from the surface and also are careless of their performance. The lack of some basic amenities and adequate provision of some infrastructures of this bases need may create massive psychological barrier against further study, which may cost them to handle the job with so much laxity. A well balance society in terms of academic excellence is likely to obtain stability than a society where it is not so. All the above help us to see the

need for the provision of teacher’s basic needs.

1.3  Research Question

  5. Are there enough accommodation for social studies teachers in Avwaeke primary school in Abraka
