ABSTRACT

The study was done to determine the quality of chest radiographs of adult patients, most common factors that mostly affects the radiographs and to provide measures that will reduce those factors at north eastern Nigeria. 380 radiographs was used for this study and this radiographs were gotten from Federal Teaching Hospital Gombe, Federal Medical Center Jalingo, Federal Medical Center Yola, Specialist hospital Bauchi and Specialist Hospital Maiduguri. The PA chest radiographs were studied under collimation, anatomical marker, positioning, lung field visualization, scapula off the lung field, inspiration and penetration for CEC compliance.359 radiographs fulfil the anatomical marker criteria while 21 were inadequate or wrongly placed, in collimation 81 radiographs were adequate while 299 radiographs did not, 246 radiographs were rightly positioned while 134 were not, in lung visualisation 348 fulfil this criteria and 32 did not, the scapula is thrown off the lung field in 314 radiographs and 66 did not. Good inspiration effort was obtained in 368 radiographs and not in 12, penetration was adequate in 350 radiographs and inadequate (either underpenetrated or over penetrated) in 30. It was found out that 295(77.7%) of radiographs were adequate and 22.3% considered inadequate (poor quality).
