CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1     BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

A leader is someone who can influence others and who has managerial authority. Leaders, it also a person who influences his followers to achieved group objective in `a given situation. Leadership is what leaders do.

It is a process of leading a group and influencing that group to achieve its goals. Managers should be a leader, because leaders and leadership are from managerial prospective. (Stephen, Mary and Neharika 2009). Leaders in organizations make things happen because they are the one who provide direction and guide the subordinate or group for achieving the increase in productivity of organization. The success of any organization depends largely on the leadership and style applicable. In these view, it is noted that a successful organization has a major attribute which distinguished it from an unsuccessful organization which is as a result of a good leadership style.

Thus, leaders are people who are able to think and act creatively in non regular situations and set out to influence the action, belief and feelings of others. A good leader is the one who is capable of persuading others to move towards the attainment of group objectives product in an organization. When the productivity of workers in organization increase or decrease there is every tendency to find out if the leaders are effective. Leaders are effective in changing the behavior of other (Joy Nonye 2008).

Leadership involves a change in an individual’s being led. The change in both acquirer of knowledge through thought and behaviourial. Leadership as a process of influencing the behavior of others towards achieving or accomplishing organizational or personal goals. (Onyishi Pet 2010) Sees, leadership as a process by which a person exert influence over others people and inspire, motivates and direct their activities to help achieved group or organizational goals.

Leadership is the ability to influence group members so as to help achieved the goals of the group. (Ukoha/Nwachukwu 2008). To improve performance and optimize productivity of all company, personnel enabling the establishment to achieve its goals is the fundamental task of the leader. In influencing the personnel towards the realization of the goals, the leader may choose from three traditional styles of leadership. Autocratic, participative and free rein leadership. Leadership  style are all strategies adopted by those who influence decisions to guarantee a continuous maximization of profit, various organizations apply different styles to adopt the environment, some styles can be control by force, while others can be gradually (progressive). It is common for workers to react negatively to repressive leadership styles. Leadership consists of three elements which are, a leader, a follower and objectives or goal.

For instances there is no leadership without a follower. Leadership is everywhere, however, follower in another, because of a position he occupies related to those of the other members of the group. The concept of leadership assuming the existing authority of a manager or whosoever is in charge of the functions.

The authority is increasing the quality, values by the subordinate’s respect and trust in the manager. The success or failure of any organization is depend on the quality of leadership exercised in the organizations effectively.

1.2     STATEMENT OF PROBLEM

The framework of leadership styles consists of broad career path which provides the opportunity for an efficient attainment of organizational objectives to another, there must be cooperate relationship between a leader and the followers. But when there is no relationship its brings a problem to the employee. Another problem is when the leader does not allow his or her subordinate to participate in decision making.

Autocratic style which is authoritarian or doctorial, the leader seeks obedience by the use of formal authority, rewards and punishment, this can refrain product unity, other signs of leadership ineffectiveness culminant from leaders being out of trench with broad trends in their organization. Demanding great conformity from its staff management and staff doing little self improvement. Industrial conflict between management and workers in a destabilizing factor and must be reduced or eliminate in the organization through the application of more compatible style of leadership.
