ABSTRACT

A research on the effects of Nigerian Pidgin English on Communication Arts Student, University of Uyo was carried out. The study design was survey method, the study population was 10,000 whereas the sample size was 180. This was determine from a known population through Yaro Yamanni statistical tool. Method of data used was primary and secondary. The primary method sourced date from questionnaire while the secondary method sourced data from text book, journals and other related materials. Students’ findings revealed that the use of Pidgin has adversely affected the English standard acquisition by student of University Uyo, but Pidgin English has least been useful among students. The study therefore recommended that standard English should not be mixed up with Pidgin English but more emphasis should be laid on the correct usage of standard English, then student should be made known that Pidgin English is not official.
