ABSTRACT

This study was carried out to investigate mental health in developing countries with a particular reference to Nigeria youths specifically Port Harcourt Local Government Area of Rivers State. To achieve this objective, five research questions and one research hypothesis were formulated to guide the study. The data was collected from both primary and secondary sources. The primary data were collected with the help of a well-structured questionnaire of two sections administered to the respondents in Port Harcourt Local Government Area of Rivers State. The collected data were analyzed tables and descriptive statistics to analyze the research questions while t-test statistical method was used to test research hypothesis. All data were coded using SPSS software. The study reveals that mental health has a significant impact on youth development and counseling. The study concluded with some recommendations there is an urgent need to have a data base about the details and extent of the unemployed so that programmes to cater for them at various levels of the society can be developed.
