Topography is generally known as the study of earth surface, and its features and shape. It also gives the description of the features (such as surface, shapes, vegetation cover and elevations), depicted in maps which are called “TOPO”. In essence, topography mainly concerned with local details such as vegetative and man – made features including local history and culture. More specifically, topographic survey involves the gathering of information on terrain, three dimensional details of the surface including recognizing the specific landforms. In modern terms, it is the generation of data digitally or electronically. The outcome of topographic survey is the graphic representation of a given land parcel on a map using several techniques such as contour lines, hypsometric tints and relief shading. This project is on Topographic Survey of part of University of Nigeria Nsukka, Enugu Campus. This is a third order survey that covers a total area of 4.102hectares and its scope cuts across; perimeter survey, spot heights determination, detailing and Digital Terrain Modelling. The project commenced with both office and field reconnaissance from which relevant data and information concerning the project were acquired. Collimation and vertical index error checks were done on the Total station. Digital method of data acquisition with aid of Total station (Sokkia Set 510, serial no. D21866) was employed to carry out the traversing, detailing and spotheighting. The acquired data were downloaded using software.Data editing and script files were prepared in Microsoft Excel and notepad respectively; the edited data were plotted using AutoCAD civil 3D Land Development 2009 and Surfer 12 Golden software was used for graphical representation of the Digital Terrain Model.The result achieved was commensurable to the desired accuracy of a third order and the plan shows the relative positions of the details within the project site. The plan was produced in a scale of 1:1000.
