ABSTRACT
The need for an affordable drip irrigation system in most rural farms in Nigerian today is on the increase and the aim of this project is to design, construct and test the hydraulic efficiency of a subsurface drip irrigation system for vegetable production in the Federal University of Technology Owerri School Farm. Preliminary studies of the area (topography and climate), soil and field analysis (moisture content, infiltration test, bulk density and grain size analysis) and water quality assessments were carried out to make definite conclusion on the parameters required for the system design. The drip irrigation set dimensionally consists of a one (1) mainline, of diameter 19mm, three (3) lateral of diameter 15mm and 18 micro tubes of diameter 4mm spaced at 50cm along the lateral lines. The emitter discharge rate was found to be 2.49 l/hr, and this will complete one irrigation of the area (1.5m x 3m) in 3 hours. Implementation of this modified design revealed reduced complexities and simplified the system so that it can be affordable to small scale farmers and also be operated by unskilled farmers.
