ABSTRACT
The leaves of Lasianthera Africana were analyzed for their nutritional, phytochemical and mineral composition. Fresh leaves were washed and air dried at room temperature. 5 grams of ground plant material were macerated separately in aqueous ethanol for 72 hours in an oven and ground to powder form. An extraction process with cold water obtained aqueous extract from the fresh leaves. Extracts were subjected to phytochemical screening to determine the classes of phytochemical present. Result of the study shows the presence of alkaloids, flavonoid, Saponins in large concentration. These substances may be responsible for the medicinal and nutritional activities of the plant. The mineral elements were determined using atomic absorption spectrophotometer giving the following results: iron (0.11%), zinc (0.08), potassium (0.16%), magnesium (0.15) and vitamin c (0.8%). Moisture content, crude fat, crude fibre, ash content, protein, carbohydrates, caloric value were also determined using various methods.
