ABSTRACT

The study was carried out to determine the prevalence and incidence of malaria on the academic performance of students living in the University of Calabar hostels. 200 students living in the hostel were surveyed at random (male and female; a secondary data was collected from the medical Centre, University of Calabar which contains the number of malaria cases of students living in the hostels from march to august. This report shows that July had the highest number of cases(1248) followed by august(878). Average malaria cases within this period of time are 698.5. The survey reports that the major way malaria affects academic performance was by making students unable to read as 192 (96%) of the 200 student surveyed reported that their reading hours reduced and 66 (83%) of the students reported that they were unable to read when down with malaria.
