ABSTRACT

The Occurrence of Staphylococcus aureus among students of the University of Uyo community was determined by collecting nasal swabs from One Hundred and eighty six (186) apparently healthy students following their informed consent. The students were aged 16 – 35 years made up of 98 males (52.7%) and 88 females (47.3%). A total of 56 (57.1%) males and 48 (54.5%) females harboured Staphylococcus aureus. The results of the antibiotics susceptibility showed that most of the isolates were highly resistant to the antibiotics tetracycline (75%), Cotrimoxazole (88%), Penicillin (86%) and sensitive to Ciprofloxacin (88%), Gentamycin (67%). High carriage rate of Staphylococcus aureus within the University Community could be a major risk factor for infection and other public health hazards. This result reveals a high carriage of Staphylococcus aureus among apparently healthy students of the University of Uyo. Therefore, good sanitary practices and improved personal hygiene
