INTRODUCTION

1.1  Background of the Study

This research work entails the description, analysis of the actor, as life portrayal. The work emphasizes the importance of the actor in the theatre, and life in general.

The Oxford Advance Learners’ Dictionary (6th Edition) sates that actors are “person who performs on the stage, film/movies or television especially as a profession”. This implies that anybody who performs on stage, movies or television as a profession is an actor.

The word profession means a type of job that needs special training or skill, especially one that needs a high level of education. With this definition, one can infer that the actor is highly trained and skilled in the art.

The actor is the product of the play or script. The actor is the one who interprets the script and gives it life and meaning. He uses some tools, which are the voice, body movement, facial expression, etc.

The actor is the tool of the director. The actor is the primary focus of the director. In the theatre, without the actor, the director has no job and the discipline called directing will be meaningless. This makes the actor crucial, significant and a core person in the theatre or any performing body.

1.2  Statement of the Problem

The actor is someone who perform on stage, movies or television by interpreting a script written by a playwright or script writer. However, some persons in the society look at actors as unserious and immoral people, because of the lifestyle of some actors and the life or character they portray on stage or movie. And because these persons fail to recognise that these actors are only portraying or displaying the society, and not their actual persons in real life, they discourage their loved ones or those close to them from studying it as a career or being involved in it as a discipline. Consequently, this is resulting to few persons studying it as career or being involved in it as a profession and if this persist, there will be difficulty getting enough persons to perform on film or stage.

In response to this problem, this research work will proffer solutions to the problem by stating the discipline involved in acting as well as the benefit of being skilled in it.
