INTRODUCTION

1.0 Introduction

This chapter introduces multimedia tourism  information system. It presents the introduction, background of the study, statement of the problem, aim and objectives of the study, scope of the study, significance of the study, organization of the research and definition of terms.

The term multimedia tourism information system can mean the deployment of computers to deliver information as text, image, audio or video, but it could be also the capacity to manipulate and distribute content that includes image, audio or video via a communication device. By definition, multimedia includes the design, implementation, manipulation, storing, and delivering of various types of media to interested users. The rapid advancement of information technology, notably multimedia and the internet has created challenges and opportunities for the tourism industry.  Information and Communication Technology (ICT) has considerably changed the role of each player in the value-creation process of the industry. Evidence indicates that effective use of multimedia information technology is crucial for tourism businesses’ competitiveness and prosperity, as it influences their ability to differentiate their offerings as well as their production and delivery costs. Rapidly changing business environment, largely brought about by the Internet, requires companies to quickly implement new business methods, develop new networks and alliances, and be creative in their marketing.
