ABSTRACT

This study was carried out to investigate a sociolinguistic analysis of the influence of gender on the language use of 400 level students. To achieve this objective, four research questions were stated to guide this study. The data collected were analyzed using simple percentages and tables to analyze research questions and Chi-square statistical tool was used for testing of research hypotheses. A structured questionnaire was used as the major instrument for data collection from the students in Department of English and Literary Studies, University of Lagos. After the careful analysis of the data, the following findings were revealed that; men and women speak differently in the process of communication; there are roles played by men and women affect their         language use; there are factors responsible for different language usages        by men and women and gender affects interaction among males and females. The study concluded with some recommendations that the indigenes should teach according to the characteristics of the male and female students and the teaching material arrangement.
